Consider going with a topic that has a variety of affiliate products being offered. That way, if one of them doesn’t sell well, you can choose another one and try that.

Once you’ve found the right niche, you then need to determine which product you should promote. A great method for doing this would be to do a search in Google and seeing which products are being promoted via pay per click.

Look for the ones being sold by affiliates. This is very important. If it’s the product creator themselves that is promoting it, they might be making money on the back end and losing money on the front end. As an affiliate, most of the time you only get the front-end money, so the back end is meaningless.

However, if it’s the affiliate that’s promoting it, you know they are only making money on the front end. This means it must be very profitable if they are willing to pay money to advertise it.

Look for the products that come up again and again. For instance, if there is one program that is being promoted for all of the main keywords in your niche, this is a better option than something that’s there for only one.

How should you test it?

Once you’ve chosen three to five products based on the above method, you will need to see how well they convert. This will give you a good idea of their moneymaking potential.

One option is to throw up a quick pay-per-click campaign. Set a limited budget and test those three to five products on the same keywords, getting the same number of clicks to each. Then see which performs the best. This will be the one you promote.

The reality is that there’s only so much you can tell from reading the sales page. A certain product might appear to have the most convincing sales copy, but the only way you can know for sure is by testing it yourself.

Pick something you believe in.

This is obvious but worth mentioning anyway. Remember – you are probably going to be writing a review for this product and putting a lot of time into promoting it. Do you really want to put in a lot of effort selling a product you can’t get behind?

The bottom line is that testing is extremely important. This is because the best converting affiliate products are often ones you would have never guessed on your own.

Seeing what’s being promoted on pay per click is one of the top methods for getting an idea of what’s converting before actually trying it out yourself. This will help you avoid wasting a lot of time when looking for best affiliate programs to promote.

Alternatively, you can send them promotional material and relevant offers through emails. The best thing is that these people give their email addresses willingly and hence, they will read your email if you have something good to offer. Your emails will not hit the bulk folder.

When you use the free keyword suggestion tool on the phrase “weight loss”, you’ll see the top 100 keyword phrases related to the weight loss market.

The Wordtracker results are meant to mirror Google search traffic, so according to this search, there are approximately 31,000 Google searches performed each day with the term “weight loss”. Some industry experts believe that this data underestimates the volume of Google traffic, and that the actual volume may be several times the amount shown in Wordtracker.

Not surprisingly, the most obvious terms are searched most often. In the example above, the term “weight loss” is itself searched about 9,500 times each day. With almost 100 million web pages relating to weight loss, there is a significant amount of competition for each of those 9,500 searches.

Your goal is to find keyword terms where you have a chance to get a top 10 search ranking for keyword terms and phrases is a relatively small number of competing websites. If you can find a keyword phrase that returns less than 10,000 web pages for the exact phrase (i.e., where the search is done with the entire phrase inside quotation marks), then you’ve found a great phrase.

If you find a relevant phrase that generates more than 10,000, but less than 30,000 competing pages, you still have a good opportunity to get your own website into the top 10 ranking.

Even if you find a phrase that generates less than 100,000 competing pages, it can still make good sense to develop a website page around that keyword phrase.

Take a look at the Wordtracker results page. Review the list of terms and try to find a “well-grouped” collection of keyword phrases. For example, visit freekeywords.wordtracker.com enter “la weight loss” and take a look at this portion of the results list, which has a common thread of “la weight loss”.

With 754,000 on Google, the direct competition for the exact phrase “la weight loss” is likely too great to reasonably address.

In general, the longer a keyword phrase is, the less competition there will be. Take a look at the following two examples:

“Does la weight loss really work” shows 3170 results in Google “Does la weight loss work” shows 4680 results in Google

Also, check how the results for these keyword phrases fare in Google PageRank, which is Google’s proprietary technique for ranking relevant pages within search results.

Go to http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/pagerank-search/ and enter your keyword phrase. Look for keyword phrases where the top results (click the initial results page to sort by “Relevance”) have a PageRank of 4 or less. This means that with the proper effort you’ll have a good chance to land a natural search results ranking in the top ten.

Using Wordtracker in combination with Google and a few other keyword tools to build a list of potential keyword phrases.

Wordtracker is a great tool for a reason. Use it to build your business, to target niche keywords and traffic, and to optimize your website for maximum results.

Not understanding how search engines work is a huge mistake because if no one knows your website exists, or can’t find the website when they’re searching for the type of product or service you sell, then you’re never going to make any money. Even if you have a top-notch web store, if potential customers can’t find it then they can’t buy from you, and your business is likely to fail.

To avoid this unfortunate situation, it’s vital that once your website is live (or, even better, that you take these issues into account as part of the process of building your website), the Internet search engines know about your site.

If Google, Bing (Microsoft’s current search engine) and Yahoo don’t know that your website exists, or what type of business you conduct, then they can’t include links to your website as part of a search results page. To make sure the search engines consider your website in the way you want, there are a couple of steps you need to take.

First, you should identify the keyword phrases that are most appropriate to your products and services. Think of them as being the words and phrases potential customers would type into a search engine if they’re looking for your products or services.

Second, you’ll need to build each of the website content pages around those phrases, and make sure the search engines will be able to “find” the pages you’ve made. Search engines use computer programs called “spiders” or “robots” to review millions of web pages every day, in order to determine what type of information is contained on those websites. (You might also hear this process referred to as “crawling”.) This information is reported back to the central database of that search engine, where it is then categorized.

Each search engine uses a different technique to determine which individual web pages are most relevant to any particular keyword phrase. The exact algorithms are secret, and it is thought they change over time. Since search engines are businesses themselves, they’re always trying to provide the best service to their users.

If you take the necessary steps to optimize your website, these search engines are able to drive large numbers of targeted visitors to your website, especially if a page of your website appears near the top of the natural search results.

Not only that, but search engines provide results in order; meaning the web pages which are considered to be most relevant and helpful to the key phrase will appear near the top of the results list. Since most of us tend to consider and click the links near the top of the list first, it’s important to not only get your web pages properly indexed to desirable keywords, but also to get your web pages near the top of the results page.

Understand how search engines work, accomplish this and your business is destined for long-term success and profitability.

#1 SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool.

Interestingly, the SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool (tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/) uses data from Wordtracker. This tool also uses information from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft all in one interface.

#2 NicheBot Classic.

Another free keyword research resource that incorporates Wordtracker data is NicheBot Classic (www.nichebotclassic.com).

One of the key features of NicheBot Classic is that you are presented with a single comprehensive view of search data from all three of the major search engines.

You’ll also be able to access the “competition” numbers from each search engine by clicking the links on the left side of the table. When you click on one of the “plus signs” that’s next to the keyword phrase, a box will pop up and let you check a number of other free keyword research resources.

#3 Keyword Discovery Tool.

The tool at Keyword Discovery (www.keyworddiscovery.com/search.html) collects data from hundreds of different search engines across the world. This makes Keyword Discovery one of the most accurate free keyword research tools available.

The free version of the tool permits you to build a list of 100 related keyword phrases. As with most of the tools that we’re discussing, there is a paid version of the tool that has more features available; in this case, a chart that shows the keyword’s search popularity over a twelve month time period.

#4 Keyword Map.

Keyword Map (www.kwmap.com) is a great tool that creates a visual representation of the keyword phrase you enter, and different keyword terms related to your phrase. If you click any of the related terms, a new graphic will be shown, with the term you clicked in the middle of the new graph. This kind of freeform research tool can take you in directions that other free keyword research tools may not lead you.

#5 Miva.

While Google is certainly the biggest pay-per-click advertising program out there, it’s certainly not the only one.

Miva (www.miva.com) is a supplementary (or perhaps alternative) program that you should keep in mind as part of your free keyword research tool arsenal. You can run a search on the Miva website to see how many searches were done on your keyword phrase within the past 30 days, and suggested alternative keyword phrases.

#6 Iotaweb.

As you might expect, many new online business owners start by trying to build one or more websites that monetize with Google’s AdSense advertising. This can be attractive to business beginners because in order to earn money, visitors to the website do not actually have to buy any products or spend any money. The only thing they need to do is click on the advertisements that are placed on your website by Google once you sign up for the AdSense program.

The disadvantage of using AdSense is that the process sometimes yields results somewhat slowly (or expensively) if you’re missing some key information, like which keywords are most valuable to advertisers.

This is a situation where Iotaweb www.iotaweb.org really help. Iotaweb is a free keyword research tool that lets you see precisely how much advertisers are paying Google and Yahoo to advertise with specific keyword phrases. This will let you focus on the highest paying phrases.

Keep in mind that the keyword industry continues to develop and change, so you should periodically renew and refresh your personal knowledge base. There are and will continue to be wonderful free keyword research tools available and paid, of course, to help aspiring internet entrepreneurs build and grow their online businesses.

Let’s use the example that you run a website that promotes a product or service, which helps people lose weight.  So, the types of people you want to find and visit your website are those who are interested in becoming thinner.  Conversely, if a visitor to your website isn’t particularly interested in losing weight (but is instead searching the Internet because they’re interested in video games or gardening), then it’s unlikely that they’re going to convert into a paying customer.

This is the concept of a “targeted visitors” – a person who is already in your website’s topic before they find your website and see the products and services you offer.

It’s not hard to see why the most successful web business are those who get traffic comprised of individuals who are already interested in the products or services offered by that business.  So it’s essential to your success that you build you individual website pages to contain and focus on the individual keywords that relate to your products and services.

In addition, it’s likely that your appearances on a given search results page won’t be limited just to pages on your own website.  The search engine is likely to find and list many “external” resources, too.  These will include marketing-type materials that you may publish through other websites.

Go ahead and type a generic search term or phrase into your favorite search engine.  Chances are that near the top of the natural search results there will be links to external aggregations sites like YouTube and EzineArticles.  This is something that you want to emulate as well.

So in order to make sure you’re driving the greatest number of targeted visitors to your website as possible, you first need to create a site in which each web page is focused on the particular keyword terms and phrases that you’ll identify.  Second, you’ll support this by creating promotional materials (again, using the relevant keyword terms and phrases), and making sure these are properly distributed on the Internet.

Finally, once your website is live, make sure to submit your web address directly to the major search engines.  Each search engine has a page that permits you to do this:

The search engines would eventually find your pages, of course, but using these quick submission forms helps the process move forward more quickly.

The fact that there is so much advice out there (some of which is sometimes contradictory) shouldn’t be surprising. Keyword research is as much an art as it is a science, and the Internet search engines that use keywords have very complicated (and proprietary) processes for determining which web pages show up in search results, and in which orders.

Although some of the inner workings of search engines are not made public (which leads to a number of different “experts” claiming that they have discovered the secrets), it’s generally accepted that one of the immutable truths for search engine success is the importance of keyword research. And despite the
cacophony of viewpoints, keyword research, and the entire keyword optimization process, is a skill (or ability, depending on how you look at it) that anyone can learn.

It’s true, the most important thing to your website is the traffic that you get.  When you want to get visitors to your website, getting traffic for free is often times much better than paying for it.  Sometimes, you may have to work a little bit harder, but overall your returns will be much greater.  If you are trying to get some traffic to a website or blog, here are three great methods that you should try to use.

1. Forum advertising

Forums are incredibly popular on the Internet.  There are forums for virtually every subject that you can possibly think of.  Plus, some of these forums are absolutely huge, with thousands and thousands of members.  Think of how you could benefit from advertising to all of these thousands of people for free.  That is exactly what you do when you use forum advertising.  Find a forum that relates to your website, or just find a general discussion forum.  In fact, it would be even better if you find 10 or 20 of them.  Then, you will need to make about 10 to 15 meaningful posts on these forums.  By then, you should be able to add a link inside of your signature.  Add a link to your website in your signature and it will be shown underneath all of your posts.  If you make some meaningful posts that people want to read, then there’s a good chance that they will click on the link to your website.  Even if they don’t, you will be getting a lot of back link power from the forum.

2. Article marketing

Writing out short articles about the subject of your website is a great method of how to get free traffic.  You can write a short article on the subject that relates to your site or your blog and then submit it to web site article directories around the Internet.  These directories will allow you to add a link back to your website at the end of your article.  When people read the article, if they like it they are very likely to click the link at the bottom and visit your site.  Plus, just like forum advertising, if people do not click on the link you will still get that back link power.

3. Blog commenting

There are hundreds of thousands of blogs on the Internet.  Chances are good that there are several blogs that are very large and related to the same topic as your blog or website.  Find these blogs and make meaningful and a sincere comments on the articles.  If you actually take time to comment on specific parts of the articles, the blog owner will probably post your comment on that article.  In doing this, you will be gaining exposure and you’ll also be able to post a link to your own web site.  Be very careful with blog commenting.  Most blog owners are very mindful of spammers.  You need to make sure that your comment is very specific about the article, so you do not look like a spammer.

These methods of how to get free traffic are the ones that I use every day.  There is almost a limitless amount of methods that you can use, but it may be to your advantage to start with these and go out from there.

One of the best ways to make your presence known online is to start a blog.  The more active that your blog is, the more successful it will be.  There are few ways to show that your blog is active.  The most important way is to update it constantly.  Having new content on a blog will show search engines that it is important and fresh.  Another way is to have an active membership base.  When people are members of your blog, they will add comments and write articles of their own if you allow them to.  That leads many of us to wonder what we should do about the spam blog comments that we receive.

You have to approach the subject very carefully.  There are two sides to this subject.  The first side is one that you may agree with if you have a very small blog that is just trying to get up and running.  You want to be able to show that you have members reading your articles.  A great way to do that is to have comments on your articles.  But, when your articles are only receiving spam blog comments, you may think that it is a good idea to leave them up.  Of course, some of them should be deleted right away because they look like they are spam.  These comments will have links in the comment and will not sound like correct English at all.

However, there may be some spam blog comments that go something like “Thank you for the great article.  There’s some good information here and it has made me want to bookmark your site and keep coming back.  Keep up the good work.”  These comments will often be made by blog commenting robots.  These are programs that will make the same comment to thousands of blogs at one time.  If a blog spammer has taken the time to write up a comment that looks like it might actually be real, you may want to leave it on to give the appearance that there are people reading and commenting on your articles.

Still, there is another school of thought when it comes to spam blog comments.  The idea behind this line of thinking is that we should not do anything to encourage spamming.  If you leave these comments up on your blog for everyone to see, then there is a good chance that the person who put it there will actually benefit from it.  When spammers benefit, they will continue to spam.  Eventually, if they have good results, their habits may turn into e-mail spamming or hacking.  Some people believe that as a blog operator, it is your responsibility to do all that you can to disrupt spam activities.  People that believe this would tell you that you should delete spam blog comments as quickly as you can.

Of course, the choice is completely up to you.  There is no way that I can tell you what you should be doing with comments on your own blog.  So, do you want to encourage spammers and leave the comments up?  Or do you want to forgo the benefit of having the appearance that your articles are being read and commented on?
